Bariatric surgery dietitian FAQs

Do I need to see a dietitian before bariatric surgery?

Your surgeon may require a dietitian appointment before surgery. Even when it is not required, a bariatric dietitian can help you understand the pre-operative diet, prepare for recovery and establish protein, fluid and supplement routines.

What can I eat after weight loss surgery?

Your surgeon will provide a staged plan, which commonly progresses from fluids to puréed foods, soft foods and then suitable solid foods. Timing varies between surgical teams and procedures, so we tailor advice to your surgeon’s protocol.

Can a dietitian help with dumping syndrome or reflux?

Yes. We can review food choices, portion sizes, eating speed, meal timing and when you drink fluids. Persistent, severe or new symptoms should also be discussed with your surgeon or doctor.

Will I need vitamin and mineral supplements?

Most people need lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation after bariatric surgery. The type and dose depend on your procedure, diet, symptoms and blood results. Your dietitian and medical team can help monitor and adjust these safely.

Can you help if my weight has plateaued or increased?

Yes. Weight plateaus and regain can have several causes. We review meal structure, protein, grazing, drinks, food tolerance, sleep, stress and other health factors, then identify realistic changes.

Can you support pregnancy planning after bariatric surgery?

Yes. Nutrition and supplement needs require close attention before and during pregnancy after bariatric surgery. We can support your nutrition alongside your GP, obstetric team and surgeon.

Can I see a bariatric dietitian online?

Yes. We offer telehealth bariatric dietitian appointments across Australia, as well as in-person appointments at selected Queensland locations.

Can I use Medicare or private health insurance?

Medicare rebates may apply if your GP has prepared an eligible referral. Private health extras may also cover dietitian appointments, depending on your policy. Contact our team if you would like help checking your options.
