Why see a dietitian for stomach and bowel symptoms?

Gut symptoms are rarely fixed by one rule. Different conditions need different strategies, and many people experience overlapping symptoms. We help you decide what to change first, what to track and what can stay the same.

Personalised nutrition therapyAdvice matched to your diagnosis, symptoms, test results, medications, culture, budget and routine.
A clear plan you can testPractical steps, timeframes and useful things to track, so you can see what is helping.
Less restriction, more clarityWe use the least restrictive approach that supports symptom relief, nutrition and food variety.

Stomach and bowel disorder support we offer

Your plan depends on your diagnosis, symptoms and everyday life. We can support one concern or help you manage several overlapping gut issues.

IBS and symptom mappingConnect meals, bowel habits, symptoms and routines to create a useful starting point.
Low FODMAP guidanceUse a structured reduction and reintroduction process when the low FODMAP diet is appropriate.
Fibre and bowel comfortAdjust the type, amount and timing of fibre and fluid for constipation, diarrhoea or mixed symptoms.
Coeliac diseasePlan nutritionally balanced gluten-free meals, understand labels and manage eating away from home.
IBD nutrition supportSupport nutrition during flares and remission while working alongside your medical treatment plan.
Reflux and diverticular diseaseDevelop practical meal, fibre and symptom strategies without unnecessary food avoidance.
A simple exampleIf bloating builds most afternoons, we may start with meal timing and a few likely triggers. If needed, we can then test a targeted FODMAP reduction before reintroducing foods to find your personal tolerance.

Stomach and bowel dietitian FAQs

Do I need to follow the low FODMAP diet for gut symptoms?

Not always. Some people do well with smaller changes to meal timing, fibre, fluids or a few clear triggers. If the low FODMAP diet is suitable, we guide you through the reduction and reintroduction stages to personalise your long-term diet.

Is it safe to cut out lots of foods for gut symptoms?

Large or long-term restrictions can reduce fibre, nutrients and food variety, and may make eating more stressful. We aim to use the least restrictive approach that still helps manage symptoms.

Can a dietitian help with IBD, coeliac disease, reflux or diverticular disease?

Yes. We tailor nutrition advice to your diagnosis, symptoms, treatment plan and lifestyle. We also focus on maintaining nutrition, food variety and a plan that works at home, at work and socially.

Can appointments be done by telehealth?

Yes. We offer telehealth stomach and bowel dietitian appointments Australia wide, as well as in-person appointments at selected Queensland locations.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

If available, bring relevant blood tests, scans or scope results, your medication list and a rough idea of your usual meals and symptom pattern. If you do not have these, we can start with the information you have.

Can I use a GP referral that names another clinic?

Often, yes. If your Medicare referral is current and written for dietetic services, you can usually use it with us. Our admin team can check the referral before you book.

Can I claim through Medicare or private health insurance?

Medicare rebates may apply if your GP has prepared an eligible referral. Private health extras may also cover dietitian appointments, depending on your policy.
