For some NDIS participants, Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) is an essential part of everyday care. It may involve enteral formula, feeding equipment, a structured nutrition plan, and support from family, carers, support workers, nurses, dietitians and the broader health team. The important point is that HEN support is not simply about supplying formula. The person may also need ongoing nutrition assessment, monitoring, practical support to follow the plan, and clear evidence explaining how the support relates to their disability. NDIS funding decisions are individual. However, current NDIS guidance recognises a number of disability-related nutrition supports that may be relevant for people using HEN or PEG feeding when the NDIS funding criteria are met.
HEN support under the NDIS can involve more than one type of support.
Depending on the person’s needs, this may include nutrition products, equipment, dietetic review, training, or assistance from people supporting them at home. What HEN Nutrition Supports May Be Relevant?A participant’s needs will depend on their disability, feeding method, level of independence, clinical complexity and the supports already available around them.
The exact combination will differ from person to person. Someone who independently manages their feeds may need very different supports from someone who relies on a support team throughout the day. Why Dietitian Evidence MattersThe NDIS may require evidence to understand what nutrition supports are needed and how they relate to the participant’s disability. A dietitian is often well placed to provide this information because the nutrition plan links the person’s clinical needs with the practical supports required at home.
What we often see in clinic is that the feeding prescription itself is documented, but the practical support needs around it are less clearly described. For NDIS planning, it can be important to explain not only what the person receives, but what is needed to make that plan work in everyday life.
Good evidence connects the nutrition need to the disability-related support need.
A clear report should explain what is required, why it is required, and how it supports safe and effective nutrition at home. Who May Be Involved in HEN Support at Home?HEN is often a team effort. Different professionals and support people have different roles, and these roles should be clearly defined.
Where support workers are involved, the feeding plan needs to be practical, understandable and consistent across the team. Training may also be required depending on the person’s individual needs and the tasks being undertaken. Why HEN Plans Need Ongoing ReviewNutrition needs are not static. Weight, growth, mobility, health conditions, medications, oral intake, hydration, bowel function and feed tolerance can all change over time. Current NDIS guidance recognises that nutrition supports need regular review to make sure they continue to meet the person’s individual nutrition needs. The dietitian can recommend an appropriate review frequency based on the person’s clinical situation.
What the NDIS Does Not Automatically FundNot every nutrition-related need is an NDIS support. The NDIS considers whether the support is related to the person’s disability and whether it meets the relevant funding criteria. Nutrition support for health conditions that are not disability-related may instead sit with the health system or another service. This is why individual assessment and clear clinical reasoning matter. The same nutrition product or dietetic service may be relevant for one participant but not another depending on the reason the support is needed. How a HEN Dietitian Can HelpA dietitian can assess whether the current feeding plan remains nutritionally appropriate, review weight and tolerance, calculate current requirements, identify practical issues with the regimen, update the nutrition plan, and provide documentation where clinically appropriate. For people with complex support arrangements, this also means considering how the plan works across the home, supported accommodation, family routines and support-worker shifts rather than looking at the feeding prescription in isolation.
